High school students from across Canada are visiting the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus this July to build their skills in STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
The Shad Canada program is offering 80 Grade 10 and 11 students hands-on learning with real-world challenges in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy and food security. This is the first time the U of A has hosted the experiential program, which has partnered with 30 campuses and produced more than 25,000 alumni over its 45-year history.
“I am excited to welcome these youths to the University of Alberta and the first Shad program being held at our Augustana campus,” says Chancellor Nizar J. Somji. “With rapid change happening in science and technology, I hope participation in the program sparks curiosity, courage and change—where their ideas can reshape the future.”
During their month-long stay, the youths will take in a range of STEAM-related activities led by U of A instructors, including lab exercises at the Augustana and North campuses, lectures, hands-on workshops and a variety of field trips, including to the Hesje Observatory. They’ll also take part in discussions with U of A graduates and others with STEAM-related career paths.
