Q:
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Kyara Nafike. I care deeply about people and am drawn to opportunities that allow me to make a difference—especially through leadership, community service, and creating inclusive spaces for other young people to thrive. I come from a close-knit family that supports my dreams wholeheartedly. Being the only girl in my family definitely keeps things fun and has taught me how to stand my ground, stay confident, and bring a unique perspective to everything I do. My interest in health has shaped how I show up both in and out of school. I’m involved in school clubs like the MedSci Club and Black Student Union, and programs like Air Cadets and the Leadership by Design (LBD) initiative—all of which have challenged me to grow academically and personally. Outside the classroom, I’ve been part of my school’s rugby, track and field, and swim teams. These experiences, along with volunteering in my community, have helped me build discipline, empathy, and a strong sense of teamwork—qualities I believe are essential in healthcare. For fun, I love reading, watching movies, roller skating, and spending time with my friends. I also enjoy connecting with people from different backgrounds, learning from their experiences, and working together to bring meaningful ideas to life.
Q:
What motivates your interest in entrepreneurship?
My interest in STEAM and entrepreneurship is driven by curiosity and a genuine love for solving problems. I enjoy exploring how science, technology, and creativity can come together to tackle real-world challenges. Programs like SHAD opened my eyes to how innovation, design thinking, and collaboration can lead to meaningful change—and that really excites me. What motivates me most is the idea that young people, including myself, can use STEAM not just to build cool things, but to make a real impact in our communities. I believe that with empathy, teamwork, and a willingness to take risks, we can help shape a better future.
Q:
What was the biggest takeaway from your Shad experience?
The biggest takeaway from my SHAD experience was discovering the power of community and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of something bigger than yourself. Living, learning, and growing alongside students from across Canada showed me just how much we can accomplish when we lift each other up and push one another to grow. From late-night conversations and shared laughs to team projects and even those early morning wake-ups with my roommate—every moment helped build a bond I didn’t expect, but will always treasure. On the final day, I received a box of handwritten notes from my peers, each sharing their thoughts about me. That small box meant everything. It reminded me that I mattered, and that we had truly impacted one another. SHAD taught me that innovation doesn’t happen in isolation—it’s rooted in connection, community, and the courage to belong.
Q:
How do you plan to use #STEAM4Good?
I want to use #STEAM4Good by staying involved in projects that support youth empowerment, community I plan to use #STEAM4Good by finding real, everyday ways to support youth and give back to my community. Whether it’s mentoring younger students, getting involved in school initiatives, or even starting my own youth-led platform one day, I want to use what I’ve learned to help others feel seen, included, and supported. My SHAD project showed me how powerful tech and design can be when it comes to solving real problems, especially around accessibility and equity. It made me realize that innovation doesn’t have to be huge or perfect—it just has to make someone’s life a little easier or better. That’s the kind of impact I want to keep working toward.
Q:
What lessons would you share with incoming Shads?
When I first showed interest in SHAD, I’m pretty sure my mom was more excited than I was! Honestly, I think she just loved the idea of me being away for the summer—a little too much, if you ask me 😅. At the time, I didn’t really know what I was signing up for. But looking back, I’m so glad I went. SHAD ended up being one of the most eye-opening and life-changing experiences I’ve ever had. It pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect, introduced me to people who inspired me, and helped me see myself—and the world—differently. So, what would I tell future Shads?
- Say yes—especially to the things that feel outside your comfort zone.
- Be curious. Be yourself. You don’t have to fit a mold to belong here.
- Start conversations, even the awkward ones—you never know where they’ll lead.
- Ask bold questions—big thinking is welcome at SHAD.
- And most importantly, be present. The time will fly by faster than you think, and the memories you make will stick with you long after the program ends.
I believe in SHAD so much that I’m planning to talk to my school about getting more students involved. Everyone deserves a chance to experience something this powerful.
