Q:
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is David Ileleji. I’m a Grade 10 student with a strong passion for coding and technology, and how they can be used to positively impact lives.
I’m the founder of Unlock Tech, a youth-led initiative focused on sparking curiosity in STEM at an early age and helping kids and teens develop digital skills. For the past two years, I’ve worked at Code Ninjas, where I teach young people how to code in a fun and engaging way. I’m very much involved in Leadership by Design, Black Boys Code, Umoja Robotics and First Robotics Canada. Each of these programs have helped me grow as a leader and build my technology skills. I’m always looking for new ways to combine creativity, technology, and leadership to help others and bring new ideas to life. Outside of technology, I enjoy volunteering at my church, spending time with the youth group and playing soccer, a sport I’m very passionate about.
Q:
What motivates your interest in entrepreneurship?
My interest in STEAM and entrepreneurship is driven by curiosity, a strong passion for coding, and a desire to create meaningful solutions. I’ve always been fascinated by how technology works and how it can be used to solve real-world problems. This curiosity led me to create an educational game about cell regeneration for my science fair project. The goal was to make complex science topics fun and engaging, and to encourage more kids to take an interest in STEAM. I’m especially motivated by the impact that innovation can have in communities with limited access to tech education. That’s what inspired me to start Unlock Tech; a youth-led initiative focused on making digital skills and STEM education more accessible. Entrepreneurship gives me the freedom to explore new ideas, build projects from the ground up, and lead through action. STEAM gives me the tools to create, and entrepreneurship gives me the platform to make a real impact.
Q:
What was the biggest takeaway from your Shad experience?
My biggest takeaway from Shad was the friendships I built and the valuable lessons on the importance of collaboration, and the mindset and desire to create real impact. At Shad TMU, I had the opportunity to work with students from across Canada, each bringing unique backgrounds, ideas, and strengths. It taught me that meaningful solutions are rarely created alone, and collaboration, active listening, and mutual support make all the difference. The Shad Design Challenge pushed me to think more deeply about the real-world impact of technology. My team and I designed a train system that could calculate the number of people in each train car to help passengers feel safer. We called it “MOTIONLY.” It wasn’t just about building something that works, it was about creating something that truly matters. These lessons I’ll carry with me in everything I do.
Q:
How do you plan to use #STEAM4Good?
I plan to use #STEAM4Good by continuing to grow Unlock Tech, creating more opportunities for youth, especially those in communities that do not have much access to technology, to learn coding and develop digital skills that prepare them for the future. I also plan to start tech clubs in schools that currently don’t have any, so more students can explore technology in a supportive environment. In addition, I hope to create educational tools, like games or interactive platforms that make complex subjects like biology or computer science fun and accessible for students. In the long term, I want to use STEAM to bridge gaps in education and healthcare through creative, tech-driven solutions. Whether it’s through AI, game design, or entrepreneurship, my goal is to use my skills to build tools that uplift others and solve real-world problems.
Q:
What lessons would you share with incoming Shads?
I would tell incoming Shads to be open to the ideas, the people, and even the unexpected challenges. Shad isn’t just about learning; it’s about growing. Step out of your comfort zone, ask questions, and take the time to truly connect with others. Use Shad as an opportunity to push yourself to try things you never thought you would. You don’t need to have all the answers, just bring your curiosity, your passion, and a willingness to collaborate. That’s how I was able to create unforgettable memories and build friendships that will last a lifetime. Most importantly, enjoy the process and be yourself. The people you meet, the experiences you have, and the ideas you explore will stay with you long after Shad is over.
