Shad Entrance Scholarships for Black Students – Chi Azuhnwi
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Chi and I’m a Grade 10 student from Alberta. My family and I immigrated to Canada in 2019, and for as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by computers and how they work. Driven by my curiosity in the field of programming, I spend my free time building web applications using front-end frameworks such as React. These web applications help me enhance my programming skills, getting me closer to my goal of being a software engineer. I also enjoy playing sports, such as basketball and soccer. I also enjoy playing chess and learning about new openings and tactics.
Q: Why do you want to participate in the Shad program/ What are you most looking forward to?
I want to participate in the Shad program because I see it as an opportunity to further pursue my interest in programming and to connect with like-minded individuals. Thanks to its numerous workshops, projects and hands-on activities, the Shad program is an invaluable experience. I eagerly look forward to being part of such a wonderful cross-disciplinary opportunity where not only can I learn from others, but I can share my knowledge with them as well.
Q: What motivates or sparks your curiosity in STEAM and/or entrepreneurship?
What motivates my curiosity in STEAM are the endless possibilities and the ever-changing nature of the field. Take the field of programming for example, everyday there is always some sort of new development or advancement made which helps further enhance the dynamics of the field. An example of this is with the recent introduction of AI. Not only that, but the possibilities which arise in STEAM fields are limitless, as there is something for everyone. This could range from being an aerospace engineer to a marine biologist. In short, I want to be at the forefront of such a rapidly developing field and help contribute to society as a whole.
Q: How do you envision your future?
In the future, I envision myself leading a happy and prosperous life. Such a future would include the ability to work from anywhere, ensuring that I am not tied to one location. I also envision myself with the ability to travel freely, exploring new cultures and experiences. In addition to that, I plan on pursuing a degree in computer science making me more adept at creating real-world applications. My career, possibly in software engineering, would ideally allow me to engage in meaningful work that not only fulfills me professionally, but also contributes positively to society.
