Jin Lu Yu, 2026 Loran Scholar

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hey! I’m a student at Richmond Hill High School who loves combining STEM, creative arts, and community impact. I’m involved in things like Student Council, DECA, band, and assistive technology projects, and I’m especially interested in biomedical engineering and accessibility-focused design!

What does this scholarship mean to you?

This scholarship means a lot because it recognizes not only achievement, but character, leadership, and community. It’s a reminder that the people and communities who supported me helped make these opportunities possible, which I’m so grateful for!

What do you hope to do after you graduate, and how do you see yourself contributing to your community?

I hope to study biomedical engineering and work on accessible medical technologies that improve quality of life. I want to continue building projects that make support and opportunities more accessible for people around the world.

What did you take away from your Shad experience, and did any of those lessons come up during the Loran Scholar selection process?

Shad taught me how much innovation depends on collaboration and empathy. A lot of those lessons came up during the Loran process because many conversations focused less on accomplishments and more on how you work with and support other people. Shad also helped me solidify my love for engineering, which helped during the selections as well.

What would you want to say to someone just starting the Shad2026 program?

Say yes to everything!!!! Talk to people outside your comfort zone, try things you’ve never done before, and don’t be afraid to fail a little. You’ll learn lessons during lectures obviously, but most of the learning happens with the community! Do everything! Make the most of your experience!!!
