Entrance Scholarship for Students from Métis Nation of Saskatchewan – Hadley Gariepy

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Hadley Gariepy, I’m a grade 10 Métis student from Kinistino, Saskatchewan. I’m the eldest daughter in a family of five. Our family is always on the go, and we travel a lot, but I love spending time with them. I do competitive dance and spend most of my time at the studio practicing and teaching dance classes.  I like to stay busy, and I am currently working two part time jobs.  In my free time, I’m either playing my bass guitar, running, or spending time with my dogs. My passion is being a leader, and I love being able to help out in any way possible.

Q: Why do you want to participate in the Shad program/What are you most looking forward to?

I want to expand my horizons and develop new skills. I’m looking forward to Shad and meeting like-minded people who share my ambition for learning and making the world a better place. I’m excited to improve my leadership skills, learn about entrepreneurship, and expand my knowledge of math, science, and technology.  Education has always been important to me, and attending Shad opens up a whole new world of opportunities, providing me with important skills for my future.

Q: What motivates or sparks your curiosity in STEAM and/or entrepreneurship?

I will always be motivated by helping people and STEAM offers an endless number of ways to make an impact on people’s lives and make groundbreaking changes in the world. I would like to study medical sciences and help develop cures for diseases, relieving people’s pain. I’d like to study the brain and make positive contributions to the recovery of neurological disorders or help understand differences in the way individuals learn. The inclusion of arts in STEAM is something that I’m interested in. As a dancer, especially, I believe that there are so many ways that art can change the world and have a positive influence on people’s well-being, physically and emotionally. Learning about STEAM can help me make discoveries that will change the way we view the world and could impact people one on one or solve global issues such as climate change, food security, and health crises.

Q: How do you envision your future?

Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to be a dentist. I’ve always envisioned myself having a career where I can be in charge of an office or own a business so that I can have a diverse workday. The medical industry is appealing to me because not only could I fulfil my desire to help people, but I’d also overcome challenges and experience new things all the time. A career that involves a variety of different tasks where I can grow and constantly learn would be ideal for my future. Although I’m not sure exactly where I’ll end up in my life, I want to be able to bring joy to people’s lives no matter what I do.
