Entrance Scholarship for Métis Nation within Alberta students provided by Rupertsland Institute – Jake Matthiessen

Q : Parlez-nous un peu de vous.

My name is Jake, and I am a grade 10 student from OLMP catholic high school. I have lived in the same town my whole life and a lot of what I do is walking around it. I love school and learning; these two things take up most of my life. I maintain good grades, I look up fun facts, and have gone to every museum in an hour radius. I hope to eventually work in a scientific field, I just don’t know which one.

Q : Pourquoi souhaitez-vous participer au programme Shad attendez-vous avec le plus d'impatience ?

What I want most from Shad is an opportunity to explore the opportunities of science. I want to see my options, but I also want to spend a month of my summer doing something interesting. I’m probably most excited to have a busy schedule. Sometimes I just don’t know what to do with myself, so I really appreciate plans like this.

Q : Qu'est-ce qui motive ou suscite votre curiosité pour les STEAM et/ou l'entrepreneuriat ?

I don’t know what I want to do in post-secondary school yet. I feel most motivated to pursue something in the sciences and learning more about that field of study. What motivated me to expand my knowledge is the search, the idea of spending my time well, working toward something. I want to be happy, and I hope that expanding my knowledge can help do that for me.

Q : Comment envisagez-vous votre avenir ?

I don’t know a lot about everything and so I can’t confidently envision my future without learning more. I like to imagine myself happy, of course I do and I’m not sure how to become that. I hope I get to achieve this through science, I especially like to imagine myself working as a researcher on some cold, remote island. Envisioning one’s own future is not so easy but I want to see science right next to me.
