Entrance Scholarship for Black Students – Tolami Ogunyemi

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Tolami Ogunyemi, and I am from Lagos state, Nigeria. I am a grade 11 student passionate about engineering, innovation, and creating inclusive spaces. I love reading and crocheting and knitting. I am currently on my schools SRC as a spirit and diversity representative because I am very passionate about creating diverse communities and bringing spirit to my school and the community.

Q: Why do you want to participate in the Shad program/What are you most looking forward to?

I am looking forward to joining a community of students who are equally curious, driven, and imaginative. I’m especially looking forward to collaborating on real-world design challenges, developing solutions that have impact, and learning from mentors who are paving the way in STEAM fields. I am also really looking forward to making new and impactful friendships during my time at Shad.

Q: What motivates or sparks your curiosity in STEAM and/or entrepreneurship?

As a young woman of colour aspiring to become an engineer, I’m motivated by the power of STEAM to break boundaries and solve systemic challenges. I’m inspired by how innovation can drive positive change—and I want to be part of that impact.

Q: How do you envision your future?

I see myself leading teams to create ethical, sustainable technologies that serve both people and the planet. Whether I’m founding a start-up or working in environmental engineering or research. I want to build solutions that are inclusive, bold, and driven by purpose.
