Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello there! My name is Ewen, and I am a 16-year-old, grade 11 student, at G.P Vanier Secondary in Courtenay, B.C. I work at my local swimming pool as a lifeguard and swim instructor. I love running events and programs at the pool for the community. In my schoolwork, I enjoy finding ways to apply my technological skills to assignments. I have created videos, skits, and songs for my classes. My biggest hobbies are videomaking and photography. I love improving my skills and making fun projects whenever I have the time. I’m very excited and honoured to be attending Shad this summer!
Q: Why do you want to participate in the Shad program/What are you most looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to Shad because I’m hoping it will be a good place to find people with similar interests as me, and it also seems like a great way to prepare for university. I have always had an interest in STEAM-related topics, specifically the technological side, and I can’t wait to learn and grow with my fellow students!
Q: What motivates or sparks your curiosity in STEAM and/or entrepreneurship?
My interest in STEAM is sparked by the versatility of being able to bring ideas to life. I love how it gives me the freedom to explore different pathways and achieve my goals. I am especially drawn toward the technological side; the skills and knowledge gained by being literate in technology are key to living in the world. STEAM encompasses all my favorite topics and hobbies and is a great way to learn.
Q: How do you envision your future?
In the future, I hope to become an optometrist. I’ve worn glasses since I was three, and I would like to be able to help people in a hands-on, meaningful way. Vision is such an important part of life, and the idea of being able to assist people in improving it sounds amazing. I’m excited to keep learning throughout university, gain experience, and hopefully help people someday.
