Celebrating the Shad alum named 2024 Schulich Leaders – Emma Shi
Q: How does it feel to be named a Schulich Leader?
The feeling is nothing short of surreal. A few months ago, I could not have even imagined the possibility of receiving the honor of being a Schulich Leader. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my family, friends, and mentors, whose encouragement and guidance have paved the way for this incredible opportunity. I am so excited to be a part of the Schulich network and to learn from some of the most brilliant individuals in Canada.
Q: What motivates your passion for STEAM/Entrepreneurship?
What excites me about STEAM is the limitless potential to transform an innovative idea into reality; there are no constraints on what you can create. I am motivated to use my creative-thinking skills to develop new technology that can make an impact. Whether that be aiding social and environmental causes, or fueling my interest in FinTech, I hope that I can make a difference and one day, even launch a start-up!
Q: At Shad we are leaders in social innovation, how do you plan to use #STEAM4Good?
I plan to use #STEAM4Good by focusing on projects that empower underrepresented and underprivileged communities through technology. At Shad, my team and I developed a website and prototyped a device that uses virtual reality to make healthcare services more accessible for remote communities. In the future, I aim to create more initiatives that drive social good and inspire others to join the mission of making a positive impact on the world through STEAM.
Q: What lessons would you share with incoming Shads?
To incoming Shads, I would say: Never fear failure. At Shad, it is easy to feel overshadowed by the high achievers you are surrounded by for a month. During the first week of my own experience, I saw myself continuously comparing myself to others and as a result, diminishing my accomplishments. However, as the program progressed, my perspective shifted as I began to see the community that makes Shad what it is. I learned from my peers and created friendships that I can confidently say will last a lifetime. If this process has shown me anything, it is the importance of aiming high and believing in your capabilities. Remember, we truly are often our own harshest critics. Embrace every challenge and push the boundaries of what you think is possible
