Tell us a little about yourself.
Aanii, Hello my name is Adonia Dunwell, and I am a 17 year old grade 11 student at Marymount Academy in Sudbury ON. I am proud to be Oji-Cree from Flying Post First Nation. I love being involved in clubs and committees both within my school and throughout my community. As Secretary of my school’s Girls Athletic Association and Student Council, as well as Vice-President of our Charity Council, I have developed strong leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. I enjoy finding opportunities to strengthen my public speaking abilities and using my interests to make a positive impact on others.
One of my unique passions is participating in stage-like competitions and activities like play and ones that many people may not be familiar with, such as pageants. Through these experiences, I have built confidence, leadership skills, and a platform to advocate for causes that matter to me. I also founded a province-wide initiative called Crowned in Culture, which focuses on empowering BIPOC youth with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed.
I am incredibly excited and honoured to be attending Shad this summer, and I look forward to learning, collaborating, and growing alongside such talented and motivated students from across Canada.
Why are you excited to participate in Shad? What are you most looking forward to?
To tell the truth, I never thought I would have the opportunity to attend Shad. Receiving an acceptance, and then a scholarship, was something I never expected. I am incredibly grateful for the chance to further develop my skills in STEAM.
I am especially looking forward to the ShadSpeaks events and the opportunity to hear from guest speakers from across the country. I am also excited for all the new experiences, connections, and learning opportunities that I will gain throughout the month.
What sparks your curiosity or interest in STEAM and/or entrepreneurship?
Definitely my future career goals. I’ve always been curious about the forensic science field. My future career goals are rooted in my long-standing interest in the field of forensic science. I aspire to become either a forensic pathologist or a Crown attorney. While these careers are quite different, both play important roles within the legal system and are strongly connected to STEAM disciplines.
My interest in STEAM has evolved significantly over the years, especially after taking biology this year. The course opened my eyes to the complex world that exists beneath the surface, from the intricate workings of cells to the systems that sustain life. I particularly enjoy hands-on learning experiences, such as laboratory work, where I can apply concepts in a practical setting. These experiences have strengthened my passion for STEAM and further inspired me to pursue a career that combines science, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
How do you envision your future?
I hope to pursue my post-secondary ambitions by earning either a double major in Psychology (BSc) and Criminology or a degree that combines Business and Politics. Both pathways align closely with my future career goals and reflect the subjects that genuinely interest and inspire me.
Beyond my academic goals, I hope to study abroad for a year, travel the world, and take advantage of opportunities that allow me to grow personally and professionally. I am particularly interested in public speaking, conferences, leadership initiatives, and committees that align with my values and passions. Through these experiences, I hope to broaden my perspective, build meaningful connections, and continue making a positive impact in my community and beyond.
