Sylvia Mikaelian, Shad2026 Entrance Scholarship for Indigenous Students

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hello! My name is Sylvia. I am a student in grade 11, and I go to Victoria Park Collegiate Institute located in Toronto. One of my favourite hobbies is playing instruments – my personal favourite, and my greatest achievement being the cello, which I have played for over 5 years! I love doing anything creative, challenging, and I love working with my hands.  Hiking and being outdoors is one of my happy places, and I love to admire and identify the plants and bugs on my hikes.  I am Algonquin with mixed settler heritage.

Why are you excited to participate in Shad? What are you most looking forward to?

I am most excited for the opportunity to be around other people who have a similar passion for learning that I do! I’m additionally really excited to be able to learn new things, especially involving STEAM.

What sparks your curiosity or interest in STEAM and/or entrepreneurship?

Ever since I was young, I gravitated towards the world of STEAM. It was reflected in the things that I enjoyed doing at home, such as science activities and research. STEAM provides me with a fascination with the world that no other field of interest has, and I hope to use it to make the world a safer and better place.

How do you envision your future?

Despite the fact that I’m still not entirely decided on where I want to go, I know that whatever specific field I go into will come from my love of STEAM, and I know that music will be a passion of mine to carry with me through my future. I am hoping that Shad will also give me a much better understanding of what fields speak to me specifically.
