When Shad Alums Billy Truong, Mark Seeman, Katie Yu, and Sadie MacDonnell were told that they had earned a Loran Award, one of Canada’s most prestigious and comprehensive undergraduate awards, they felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and support from the Loran community.
The Loran Scholars Foundation looks beyond grades to identify values-driven youth who demonstrate strength of character, a deep commitment to service, and exceptional leadership potential. In joining the community of Loran Scholars, these Shad alums are recognized for demonstrating these core values through service to others and their communities. A total of 114 Shad alumni have earned this honour.
We were able to connect with these outstanding youths to learn how receiving this scholarship will help them continue to have a positive impact. Billy plans to engage fully with the network of Loran mentors and learn from their experiences. Mark plans to utilize these new connections to achieve his dream of advancing medical technologies. Katie plans to continue her work in community sustainability initiatives to fight climate change. Sadie hopes to use the opportunity to continue advocating for her Indigenous community.
