Fisheries Biologist, Center for Fisheries and Ecosystem Research, Marine Institute of Memorial
Kiley (she/her) is new to Shad, joining the Shad Memorial team as a faculty member during Shad2024. She enjoys the fast-paced environment and fostering young minds to explore academic and social interests while discovering a new place.
Kiley comes to the team as a fisheries biologist with the Center for Fisheries Ecosystems Research at Marine Institute, a campus of Memorial. Working with fisheries and aquaculture industry research, post-secondary education, and ocean literacy advocacy since 2008.
Including research in capelin ecology in Newfoundland waters, aquatic invasive species research and public education, the Canadian seaweed industry development, citizen science, and habitat restoration. Teaching and curriculum development in undergraduate programs and working on projects with Marine Institute International. Most notably with T.A. Maryshow Collage in Grenada West Indies, the establishment of an applied research institute and programming for student exchange between T.A. Maryshow Collage and Marine Institute.
Kiley holds a Master of Science in Aquaculture, an Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Aquaculture, and a Bachelor of Science Biology from Memorial University. Kiley actively volunteers in the ocean space as a founding board member and board chair of the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium est. 2013 and Co-chair of the Canadian Network for Ocean Education (CaNOE).
Outside of work, Kiley enjoys stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, open-water swimming camping and hiking, and cleaning up the outdoors at any opportunity.

Mal (they/she) began their Shad journey as a participant at Shad Queens in 2018. Following that transformative experience, they joined the Shad Memorial team in 2022 as a Program Assistant. After advancing to Program Manager in 2024, Mal has now stepped into a new chapter as Assistant Program Director for 2026.
Outside of the Shad community, Mal’s academic background at Memorial University centered on health professions biology and criminology. Now a Bachelor of Education candidate, she is preparing for a career as a high school educator specializing in the sciences. Mal’s professional background also includes impactful work with a provincial non-profit, where they focused on advocacy and professional development for family physicians before finding her calling in the education field.
Mal’s energy extends well beyond their professional work, whether they are performing on the ice with their synchronized skating team or collaborating on a grand campaign in Dungeons & Dragons. Their love for performance is balanced by a deep appreciation for music and a fascinating interest in the investigative world of forensics. Whether it’s through sport or strategy, Mal thrives in environments that challenge both their creativity and their discipline.
