Oki, and welcome to the University of Lethbridge. Our University’s Blackfoot name is Iniskim, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone. The University is located in traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory. We honour the Blackfoot people and their traditional ways of knowing in caring for this land, as well as all Indigenous Peoples who have helped shape and continue to strengthen our University community.
Rooted in the land, the University of Lethbridge is built on diverse ideas, big questions and open minds.
The University of Lethbridge is Iniskim, or Sacred Buffalo Stone, and is located in the heart of traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory in southern Alberta. Thanks to determined and forward-thinking group of citizens who believed southern Alberta warranted its own university, ULethbridge open its doors in 1967 and established our home in west Lethbridge.
Each year, ULethbridge welcomes approximately 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students from nearly 100 countries to our campuses in Lethbridge and Calgary. Today, approximately 55,000 ULethbridge alumni are making important contributions in communities across the globe. The ULethbridge campus spans more than 500 acres and is home to spectacular coulee views, signature architecture and exceptional facilities to learn, work and play.
ULethbridge is renowned for having smaller class sizes (on average 32 students per class), a focus on students and the student experience, and exceptional teaching and support activities. Our unique liberal education approach enables students and alumni to critically integrate ideas and experiences across disciplines, equipping them with the adaptive thinking and skills necessary to navigate, succeed and contribute to a rapidly changing world.
ULethbridge is a research-intensive university where undergraduate and graduate students work alongside accomplished researchers in a highly supportive community of learners. From ideas to impact, our research, scholarship and creative activities consistently exceed expectations and enhance peoples’ lives in the community, across the province and around the world.
Home to more than 100,000 people, Lethbridge is a place where ideas grow. Culturally vibrant with a flourishing arts scene and active social calendar, we boast a stunning scenery, four distinct seasons, spectacular sunrises and glowing sunset that illuminate Alberta’s big sky. Lethbridge is only two hours from Calgary’s International Airport and a short drive to the United States border.
With the opening of Science Commons in 2019, the University is home to one of Canada’s most advanced facilities for science education and research. The Science Commons will serve as the primary space for your exploration of STEAM in July 2026! After all, where you learn shapes how you learn.

Hey! I’m Aidan, an economics graduate from the University of Victoria. My academic passion lies in labour and environmental economic policy but recently I’ve been enjoying seeing how much modern economics is changing with our current political climate. Outside of academia, my love is the outdoors. In my free time, you’ll find me travelling, enjoying a hike, playing beach volleyball, or going for a bike ride. These activities are why summer is the best season and I can’t wait to share July with you all!

Hello Shads. As the Manager of Destination Exploration, I oversee all the K-12 STEM programming at the University of Lethbridge. I have a degree in Civil Engineering and Management from McMaster University where I focused on structural design and consumer behaviour – an odd combination, but it all boils down to being fascinated by why things and people do what they do! While only at the University of Lethbridge for the past 6 years, I have been sharing my love for engineering and STEM with youth since 2013! In my spare time, you’ll find me playing the guitar, exploring the area, or snapping pictures. I’m a kid at heart, and I’m not afraid to get a little messy for the sake of science.

Teacher Fellow
Hello, Shad community! I am currently a Career and Technology Studies teacher at Winston Churchill High School, where I teach Fashion Studies and Food Studies courses. I have a combined degree in Human Ecology and Secondary Education from the University of Alberta. When I’m not teaching, I spend my time training in Tae Kwon Do, gardening, quilting and trying out new hobbies. I love learning new skills and exploring different ways to be creative.
Shad2026 runs from July 5 to July 31. We kindly request that you arrive at the University of Lethbridge’s Mount Blakiston House Apartments between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 5. Check-in will be hosted in the main lobby of the building. The earlier you arrive, the more time you will have to familiarize yourself with the campus, program team and other participants. When you arrive at the residence building, our team will greet you. We will check you in and then you will have the opportunity to quickly move into your assigned room. If you arrive on campus with your family, we ask that you say goodbye once you have registered. You will be sharing an apartment with three other Shads, and as such, it may become overwhelming if all families go into residence rooms.
The first meal provided by the program will be dinner at 6:00 p.m.
Transportation from Airport:
For those arriving by air, Shad ULethbridge offers an airport pick-up service for a fee through a charter company:
Shad team members will be at the Calgary airport to welcome those arriving by air. Details of how to book and pay for the airport pick-up and drop-off service will be shared in the near future.
IMPORTANT: When booking your flight, please ensure that you arrive in Calgary by 1 p.m. as the charter leaves the airport promptly at 2:30 p.m. See note about departure flights.
Do not book a flight directly to Lethbridge. In our first year, almost all flights in and out of Lethbridge were cancelled. In addition, the team will be busy meeting Shads in Calgary and welcoming those who are driving directly to campus, and will not have the capacity to meet Shads at the Lethbridge airport. The charter bus ride from Calgary to Lethbridge offers an excellent opportunity for students to get to know one another.
For those being dropped off on campus, please do so at the Mount Blakiston House Apartments, Aperture Drive West. Download a printable map of ULethbridge or follow Google Maps. There will be Shad signs posted around the area.
Please share your travel plans as they are finalized. We will send a form to share this information later in the spring.
Note that you are responsible for your own travel arrangements and costs to and from campus.
Residence
Shad participants will be living in Quad (4-bedroom) apartments, all with private single bedrooms with doors that lock. Participants must keep their room access card with them at all times. Each Quad has two bedrooms and a bathroom on either side with shared common space (kitchen, living room, dining room) in the middle. Shad Bedding and linen will be provided (pillow, light blanket, sheets, bath towel, face cloth). Room assignments are assigned randomly before your arrival at the residence. Shad ULethbridge staff will also live in residence, and we will occupy all 4 floors of the side of the building we are in.
Be sure to bring your own beach towel, soap, shampoo and other toiletries. If you prefer a blanket for your bed, please bring one with you.
You will be living in residence on the university campus and there will be other paying guests using the residence accommodations on the other side of the building. You will all access the building through the main lobby entrance. However, access to the Shad area is limited to Shad ULethbridge. You have the responsibility of keeping your property safe and keeping your room door locked. Shads will be held financially responsible for replacing any lost keys to the residence.
Food
Most of our meals will be eaten on campus. Keep in mind that it is a University, so the food may not be like your home-cooked meals. There will be a variety of food that accommodates most tastes.
Please include any dietary requirements or allergies in your medical form.
Laundry
There will be pay-per-use washers and dryers available. You will need to load the Bridge Bucks laundry card with funds for the month, online or via the machine in the lobby. Each load of laundry will cost $4.00 (wash and dry). You should bring your own laundry pods and dryer sheets as there are no machines on campus to buy this. Plan to wash one load per week and bring the appropriate laundry supplies.
While there are no irons in the rooms, if needed, an iron can be borrowed for participant use.
Residence Key
You will be given residence keys for which you will be responsible. More information will be shared by your program director. There is no deposit required.
Banking
We recommend that you bring some pocket money with you for laundry, optional Shad wear, and purchasing souvenirs.
We advise against bringing large amounts of money or other valuables (expensive jewelry and watches). There is no need for such items, and we cannot accept responsibility if they go missing.
Computers
We recommend that you bring a laptop, tablet or another personal computing device for research, word processing, and other tasks related to the program. Wi-Fi access is available in residence and elsewhere on campus. Shad team members will assist you with Wi-Fi setup upon arrival. The University and Shad Canada do not take any responsibility for lost/damaged/stolen valuables or property.
If you are unable to bring a laptop, please contact us.

Please note that Shad is not liable for any lost, stolen or damaged personal items.

Shad Values
Our values are what make Shad the incredible program that it is. At our Shad campus, these values are vigorously embraced – just like they are at each of the other campuses across Canada. Our values are as follows:
Being a Shad means accepting these values fully into everything you do! Adherence to these values determines how successful your Shad experience will be. They are sacred trusts.
Diverse & Inclusive Community
A diverse and inclusive community is an important value of the Shad program. You will meet students from across Canada, with different lived experiences and backgrounds. Some of you have experience with complex, high responsibility activities such as traveling or being away from home, while for others, this may be your first time being apart from family. Respect for all individuals is a requirement for a successful community.
Community must be preserved and protected in the Shad program. There are no exclusive relationships at Shad, whether for the purposes of romance, clique, gender, ethnicity, or any other reason. Relationships that exclude (or attempt to exclude) others will not be accepted. Intentionally excluding others is a form of bullying and could result in dismissal from the program. The month at Shad provides you the opportunity to make connections with a community of other exceptional students. We hope that this tight-knit community that forms at Shad will continue for many years after the program.
Supportive Team
The Shad team is here to support you. Your program team is made up of leaders who are committed to working with students to meet their needs.
Supervised Community
Shad is a supervised community. Every member of the program team is charged with the responsibility of ensuring your safety and protection. We take this responsibility seriously! This means that we will need to know approximately where you are and what you are doing at all times. This level of awareness ensures that in case of an emergency, we can account for your whereabouts quickly.
You are also a partner in ensuring your own safety and the safety of the Shad community. You are expected to ensure that your behaviour is always aligned with the Shad values.
Just because the community is supervised does not mean that you won’t have freedom to engage in a range of activities across the university campus. We take advantage of many of the various programs, departments, recreational facilities and spaces on campus to ensure that you enjoy an exciting university experience.
Schedule
You can expect life at Shad to be busy, but don’t worry, we have downtime and recreational activities built into the program as well. Each day, you can expect a different combination of lectures, workshops, recreational and cultural activities, as well as unscheduled time that you can use to connect with your peers, rest, connect with family, work on your design project, and reflect on what you’ve learned and accomplished so far.
Tech-etiquette: Appropriate usage
The ability to rapidly access relevant information can be key to innovation. There is no question that effective use of technology can be a useful tool. That said, the appropriate use of technology is essential for an effective learning/teaching/cooperative environment. There is etiquette for the use of technology. Rather than provide a long list of rules that will define acceptable use of technology, our technology policy is governed by the same core values as Shad.
All use of technology — including cell phones, notebooks, tablets, translators and the like — must uphold the principles of excellence, responsibility and creativity. While you might be an exceptional multitasker, maintaining devoted attention to a task at hand is a hallmark of responsibility and maturity. When it comes to the use of technology, know what’s right, do what’s right and be respectful!
Recreation at Shad
There will be opportunities for recreation throughout your time at the program including physical and creative activities. Each campus takes advantage of their unique surroundings and plans fun, exciting ways to engage within your Shad community.
Energy Management
Shad is most enriching when we have sufficient energy to be fully engaged in all program activities. After a long and busy day, everyone needs adequate rest. We also need to respect others and allow them to re-energize themselves by getting the rest they need. Please manage your energy levels appropriately and allow others to do the same by going to bed at the appropriate time.
ShadTile
Create a door sign for your apartment. Introduce yourself. Be creative. This is an opportunity for everyone to get to know a bit more about you.
ShadSpeaks
At Shad ULethbridge, we’re not just interested in having you listen; we’re eager to hear what you have to say! Throughout the program, you’ll have the chance to deliver a Shad Speak — a 7-minute presentation on a topic close to your heart. Whether it’s a cause you’re passionate about, an issue you want to shine a light on, or a personal story you’re excited to share, this is your moment to inspire and be inspired. Get ready to be authentic, genuine, and tech-free — no PowerPoint needed! We’re all about celebrating diverse interests and experiences while learning from each other. So, bring your enthusiasm and get ready to make your mark at Shad ULethbridge!
Come to Shad with your Shad Speak prepared. And remember, Shad Speaks will be strictly timed to 7 minutes, so don’t go over. We will be asking you to submit a 100-word abstract of your topic prior to the start of the program. An online form will be emailed to you with more information on how to submit this abstract.
Pre-program Online Forms
You will receive an email from us asking you to complete several online forms in the near future. This includes a general information form (including dietary/medical information), travel information and Shad Speaks.

Full-time commitment to Shad is expected.
Outside Food

The vending machines do not take cash and as such, you must load your Bridge Bucks card. More information about the Bridge Bucks card will be sent out via email.
Instruments
Q: Will I have access to a piano to practice regularly?
A: Shad is a wonderfully musical place with many spontaneous jam sessions. We encourage Shads to bring their sheet music or other instruments with them. Note that access to instruments is limited by the program schedule and the residence’s quiet hours. Therefore, regular daily practice is not guaranteed. Shad ULethbridge will have access to some instruments.
Gym Access
Q: Will I have access to athletics facilities such as a gym or pool?
A: No. We hold recreation periods daily, however participants will not have daily access to gyms, fitness rooms, or pool.
