ShadAnywhere The Echo Campus Information Guide
in partnership with Athabasca University
ShadAnywhere participants are joining us virtually at Athabasca University (AU) from all across the country, and maybe even beyond—just like all AU students!
As one of the world’s foremost and fastest-growing online and open post-secondary institutions, AU serves more than 38,000 students across 81 countries. It is the second-largest university in Alberta, and one of four comprehensive academic and research universities in the province.
Headquartered in the boreal forest of Athabasca, Alta., AU provides high-quality learning, scholarship, and research environments and strives to ensure that everyone can have access to a university education. The university is dedicated to the removal of barriers that restrict access to and success in university-level study and to increasing equality of educational opportunity for adult learners worldwide.
AU offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs alongside courses for both personal learning and professional development. It is uniquely founded on the principles of flexibility and openness, giving students control over their studies so they can learn whenever and wherever is right for them. The research community at AU is open and online by design, with research focused in four thematic areas: environmental and societal dynamics of sustainability; disruptive pedagogies; society, culture, health, and well-being; and digital futures. AU is home to four Canada Research Chairs and several other research chairs in business, science, humanities, and health disciplines.
We’re proud to partner with Shad Canada to offer this opportunity to all our future ShadAnywhere alumni. Welcome to AU!
Athabasca University respectfully acknowledges that we live and work on the traditional lands of the Indigenous Peoples (Inuit, First Nations, Métis) of Canada. We honour the ancestry, heritage, and gifts of the Indigenous Peoples and give thanks to them.
Welcome to The Echo campus of ShadAnywhere!
Welcome to the Echo cohort of ShadAnywhere! As a Shad, you’re part of a special group of grade 10 and 11 students from across Canada and around the world. Being a part of the Echo cohort means you’re among a talented and driven community of students who are passionate about innovation and making an impact. At ShadAnywhere, you’ll take part in interactive sessions and dive into hands-on projects that blend STEAM with entrepreneurial thinking. This program offers you the opportunity to develop innovative solutions, build leadership skills, explore new academic areas and collaborate with like-minded peers, all while being supported by our Echo team every step of the way. The ShadAnywhere experience aligns with AU’s commitment to breaking down barriers and providing access to high-quality education, regardless of location and background. We’re excited to meet you and can’t wait to see you grow, learn and connect with other exceptional students who share your passion for making a difference.
Campus Lead
As The Echo’s Campus Lead, Monika (she/her) works closely with the Shad National Team, an incredible leadership team, and a dedicated group of facilitators to create a fun and transformative experience for the Echo Shads.
Monika’s Shad journey began in 2019 as a participant at Western University, and she’s been involved ever since. She returned as a program facilitator at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2021, helped launch ShadAnywhere in 2023, and in 2024, she had the exciting opportunity to be the Campus Lead for the first-ever Echo cohort. Now, in 2025, she’s excited to return to continue inspiring future Echo innovators and leaders.
Outside of Shad, Monika studied International Economics and Finance at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy and has recently completed a Real Estate Economics and Finance course at the London School of Economics. Beyond her academic and Shad commitments, Monika enjoys reading, swimming, and watching various sports like hockey, tennis and soccer. She loves exploring new places, meeting new people, and taking on challenges that push her to grow. The connections she’s built along the way have shaped her journey, and she’s excited to keep inspiring others to do the same.
Cross-Campus Coordinator, Tech and Community
Chris (he/him) likes almost anything that has to do with technology, and he also likes helping people. So, can you imagine a better role for him than “Cross-Campus Coordinator, Tech and Community”?! This is his third year working with Shad, starting as a ShadAnywhere facilitator in 2023, coming back as a “Coordinator, Tech and Community” in 2024, and now this year in an expanded “Coordinator, Tech and Community” role.
He graduated from Athabasca University with a Bachelor of Science, Computing and Information Systems degree. Before university, he worked with computers, at a job he describes for most people as “looking after the big computers that let websites run.”
He lives in a remote setting with his wife, four dogs, and eight chickens. Here, he likes to hike (or snowshoe, depending on the weather), experiment with composting and plant growing, as well as tinker with solar power and electronics – or, what he likes to call “amateur electricianry.”
His ambitious plans for the future involve doing more of what he likes and less of what he doesn’t like. Being involved with Shad is squarely in the realm of “like”, and this year, with Cross-Campus added to his “Coordinator, Tech and Community” role, he is excited to share more of what he knows, help more people pursue their goals, and be part of a team that will see our Shads have one of the best summers ever.
Campus Coordinator, Design and Community
As this year’s Design Coordinator, Helen (she/her) is excited to bring her passion for creativity and design to Shad. This is Helen’s fourth year with the Shad community, including her time as an alumna at the University of Waterloo. Her Shad journey has been incredibly transformative and inspiring, and she looks forward to continuing to make a positive impact on future participants.
Currently pursuing a Master of Science (MSc) at the University of Toronto, Helen’s academic pursuits are matched by her love for the arts and staying active. In her free time, she enjoys painting, drawing, and staying grounded through Pilates and Yoga. A self-proclaimed ice cream enthusiast, she’s always on the lookout for the best flavor recommendations. Helen is eager to meet and get to know all of you, and she’s looking forward to another amazing year at Shad!
Shad Timing
ShadAnywhere 2025 runs from June 30 to July 25, 2025. The digital program will take place from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. There will be no scheduled programming outside of these dedicated times.
The program will be in session on July 1, and we are looking forward to being together on Canada Day!
You have committed to full-time participation in the program and we look forward to you joining our Shad community!
Arrive on screen every day, on time, eager to learn, and excited to engage with peers from across the country. We look forward to seeing you and hearing from you, so plan to have your camera and microphone turned on.
If you require assistance with technology requirements, Shad Canada has limited loaner equipment available for use. Contact Andrea Isogai to inquire.
Setting Yourself Up for Success
In advance of ShadAnywhere commencing, you will receive a ShadAnywhere email address for use throughout the duration of the program. Watch for it to arrive sometime in late June! We will host tech check-ins before the start of the program to help ensure you can access your accounts. At tech check-ins, we will also have a breakout room available for any other questions you may have – feel free to pop in if you need extra help or have anything you’d like to ask our team!
G-Suite Education is our platform of choice and Zoom will be our primary video conferencing platform. If you are not familiar with these platforms, check out instructional videos on YouTube to assist you in advance of the program.
Comfort is important. If you haven’t already established your learning environment, take time to find a quiet space with minimal background noise and interruptions where you can focus and participate fully. Consider experimenting with light and sound so that everyone can see and hear the best of you. For those interested, Shad Canada will share a virtual background in June, but anyone with a creative flair is welcome to design their own background.
Shad Values
Our values are what make Shad the incredible program that it is. At our Shad campus, these values are vigorously embraced – just like they are at each of the other campuses across Canada. Our values are as follows:
Being a Shad means accepting these values fully into everything you do! Adherence to these values determines how successful your Shad experience will be. They are sacred trusts.
Diverse & Inclusive Community
A diverse and inclusive community is an important value of the Shad program. You will be joining students from across Canada, each with unique experiences, circumstances, and challenges—they may be balancing family responsibilities, navigating limited resources, or overcoming other obstacles. ShadAnywhere was designed to break down barriers, making the program accessible to a wider range of participants and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Whether you’re experienced with online programs or this is your first time in a virtual community like ShadAnywhere, one thing is certain: treating everyone with respect is the foundation of creating a supportive and successful community.
Community is at the heart of the Shad program, and it’s important that we all contribute to creating an inclusive, supportive environment. At Shad, we believe in welcoming everyone, regardless of differences in background, identity, or interests. There’s no room for exclusive relationships, whether for the purposes of romance, cliques, gender, ethnicity, or any other reason. Excluding others in any way can harm the community and goes against our core values. The month at Shad is a unique chance to connect with other exceptional students, and we hope the friendships and bonds formed here will last well beyond the program.
Supportive Team
The Shad team is here to support you. Your program team is made up of leaders who are committed to working with students to meet their needs.
Supervised Community
Shad is a supervised community. Every member of the program team is charged with the responsibility of ensuring your safety and protection while participating in our online environment. This is a responsibility which we take seriously, and you are a key partner in our efforts. All members of our ShadAnywhere community have agreed to demonstrate behaviour consistent with our Shad Values when they accepted placement in the program. Any behaviour which deviates from these values will be addressed. If at any point you find yourself in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, disrespected, or unsafe, please don’t hesitate to connect with a member of the program team.
Schedule
A typical day will begin at 11:00 am and end at 5:00 pm, Eastern Time. Participants will be signing into the program from several different time zones and represent provinces and territories from across the country. Hours will be filled with lectures, workshops, personal challenges, community development activities, and project design initiatives. A Shad tradition is never giving the schedule away in advance as the element of surprise enhances the magic of the program. That magic continues in 2025!
Tech-etiquette: Appropriate usage
The ability to rapidly access relevant information can be key to innovation. There is no question that effective use of technology can be a useful tool. That said, the appropriate use of technology is essential for an effective learning/teaching/cooperative environment. There is etiquette for the use of technology.
All use of technology — including cell phones, notebooks, tablets, translators and the like — must uphold the principles of excellence, responsibility and creativity. While you might be an exceptional multitasker, maintaining devoted attention to a task at hand is a hallmark of responsibility, maturity, and shows respect for your fellow Shads. When it comes to the use of technology, know what’s right, do what’s right and be respectful!
Tech Etiquette: Community Guidelines
Energy Management
Shad is most enriching when we have sufficient energy to be fully engaged in all program activities. After a long and busy day, everyone needs adequate rest. We also need to respect others and allow them to re-energize themselves by getting the rest they need. Please manage your energy levels appropriately and allow others to do the same by disconnecting from the screen at the end of the day, during designated break times, and whenever helpful for your mental health. We ask that you notify a team member if you are stepping away for a brief break.
Mental Well-Being in an Online Environment
Spending several hours online each day can be challenging, so it’s important to take care of your mental well-being. Throughout the program, we will have short breaks and a dedicated nutrition break each day to help you recharge. Use these moments to step away from the screen, hydrate, eat well, stretch, or get some fresh air. Taking care of yourself will help you stay focused, energized, and make the most of your Shad experience!
We can’t wait to meet you and kick off this amazing STEAM + E adventure together! One of the most exciting parts of Shad is ShadSpeaks—your chance to shine and share what makes you, you!
Speak about something you are passionate about or tell a story! Think of it like a TedTalk you will present at Shad. This is a way for other Shads to get to know you and introduce yourself. Be as creative as you like.
Want to sing, dance, play an instrument, talk about your favorite book, share an unforgettable trip, demonstrate a cool science experiment, or showcase something from your bucket list? Go for it! The more unique, the better—we can’t wait to see your amazing live presentations!
