Everett Horner
LORAN 2019 | SHAD FELLOW
Q: How did you feel when you received the news?
A: When I received my call from Meghan I was almost hesitant to answer. After spending the entire weekend interacting with so many other awe-inspiring individuals, I realized just how much of an honour it would be to receive the award, and I really wasn’t sure how I measured up to all the other candidates. That being said, I did answer the phone, and when Meghan said that I could look forward to many more awesome weekends like that, I was nearly speechless. It was all I could do to stammer out “thank you” over and over again!
Q: How significant is it for you personally to become a Loran Scholar?
A: Nearly two weeks after receiving the news for the first time, I still have trouble communicating just how honoured I am to have been chosen as a Loran Scholar. The Loran family is much like the Shad family in that everyone genuinely cares about everyone else. The friendship, compassion, and openness that I experienced when interacting with every single finalist, past and current scholar and staff truly amazed me. I cannot wait to share more experiences with all of the scholars!
Q: What are you hoping to do after graduation? Do you have a long term goal in mind in terms of the kind of change you’d like to make or be part of?
A: I’m hoping to study engineering. My long term goal right now is just to help make the world a better place by engineering meaningful solutions to important problems.
Q: Do you believe your time at Shad had an impact on your Loran Award?
A: I certainly believe my time at Shad impacted my Loran Award. I drew on my experiences at Shad while crafting answers to application and interview questions. Shad helped me exercise my creative and critical thinking in tandem with each other and provided numerous opportunities for me to challenge myself and grow as a person.
Q: What advice would you give an incoming Shad 2019?
A: Go all in. Get to know everyone. Many of the people you meet at Shad will be unlike anyone else you have met before in your life. Shad was unlike anything else I had experienced before. Everyone at Shad has something interesting and cool about them, so find those things and learn people’s stories! Take advantage of your time at Shad and use it to challenge yourself in an environment where it’s totally okay to fall because everyone else just wants to help you back up. Learn things just for the sake of learning things! I didn’t even feel homesick at Shad because I felt like I had a new home away from home.
