Shad2020 – Update on COVID-19

Shad2020 Program Cancelled

Shad Canada has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 program due to the COVID-19 outbreak in order to put the health and safety of our participants, team members and post-secondary partners first.

Notice of this decision and information about next steps has been sent out to all of our 2020 participants and parents, our university and education partners, our valued donors and government sponsors.

We are very aware of the disappointment that this may bring, and want you to know that this decision was not made lightly.

We are committed to following the advice from Public Health Canada and feel that running our programming would conflict with medical advice that has been presented. Also, given the challenges currently facing our university partners (many of whom have started to cancel in-person programs for the summer), it is unclear when, or if, our Shad programs would be authorized to operate on campuses.

Why now?

I realize you may be wondering why we could not defer this decision. We have agonized over this but as you can likely imagine, there are many planning and financial commitments required in running a program of this size and duration, which simply don’t allow us to wait any longer. As a charitable organization, we need to be ever mindful of our duty to make the best use of our donations and grants. Making this decision today will still create a significant challenge to our organization but doing so will allow us to weather this period of uncertainty and ensure the continuation of the program for years to come.

Our program teams and central staff have been working around the clock for the past couple of weeks to consider alternative modes of delivery and/or alternate dates and unfortunately we have concluded neither option is realistic.

More information for our 2020 participants and their parents about eligibility and refunds can be found on our FAQ page.

Thank you all for your understanding, support and patience as we navigate through these difficult times, and we hope you are all staying safe and are well.
