Coffee runs, photocopying, filing; common tasks for summer interns . Luckily, my last month has not been just any internship, it’s been a SHAD internship at TWG, a software development company. 6 SHADs were selected to work alongside and be inspired by TWG’s team of digital product managers, designers, and developers. Although most of us have already been exposed to software in general, TWG has provided new insight into the tech industry.
Throughout the month, each SHAD gets the opportunity to work on a coding, entrepreneurship or research project focusing on TWG related target audiences. The project I decided to work on is a Virtual Reality map of the TWG workspace, with a focus on new employees who can see the space before arriving. This project has opened up opportunities to learn about new programs, devices and coding languages (such as using Unity and the Google Tango), but more importantly about the practical steps it takes to develop any product.
Besides project time, TWG allows us to have an opportunity to interact with different employees from different departments. Today we were able to speak to a product designer, clearly keen to answer all of our questions. Being able to do so allows most of us to reflect on our interests and use the information to help decide on career choices. By the end of the day, all of us feel satisfied with our work progress and thankful to be at the company. In a sense, TWG allows SHAD alumni to learn and understand more about the company, while making our own mark on company goals and needs.
