A week after SHAD ended, I had my first real experience in the office world at H.H. Angus & Associates. HH Angus is primarily a mechanical and electrical engineering firm that also focuses on communications, lighting, vertical transportation, and new and retrofit projects. They have been involved with many major projects that include design services for the AGO, construction of Sunnybrook Hospital, expansion of the TTC, and even consulting services for Waterloo’s Quantum Nano Center.
So far, my internship at HH Angus in the health department has been somewhat of a blessing; I really wanted to understand the importance of mechanical and electrical engineering in a real-life application and that’s exactly what HH Angus provided. The first few days consisted mostly of onboarding and training. I met with colleagues from nearly every department to learn about security, power, lighting, and mechanical features, and I also watched many videos to understand how to use Computer Assisted Design and Drafting (CADD) software.
After the brief training session, I was immediately immersed in one of HH Angus’s largest projects – Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal or CHUM. I was responsible for using the CADD software to report any discrepancies between the 3D model and the original architectural design. I was really excited that I was already making an impact within the first week of my internship. Towards the end of the week, I will also be delving into a project that deals with measuring the wattage of a floor. Up to now my internship has been an amazing experience!
