As I walked through the doors at Ciena on my first day, I was warmly greeted by the the security staff and the other SHADs. The bright yet soothing orange colour scheme of the lobby reflected the excitement that we were all feeling to finally begin work at a leading-edge technology corporation.
Our days typically begin at 9:30am with the morning coffee run to the upstairs complimentary coffee machine. Afterwards, we settle down at our desks in the lower foyer, pull out our corporate laptops, and begin work in the IT Council. This Council is the newly created division of the IT Department run entirely by us SHADs. Every day, we encourage Ciena employees to bring down their faulty laptops so that we can overview, assess, diagnose, and fix any problems. From defective screen brightness to corrupted Windows files, we’ve seen it all. Any issues we can’t deal with, we hand off to the main IT Department; effectively, we filter out all but the most serious of problems. Additionally, we are recruited to help build, image, and prepare fresh or repurposed Linux workstations for the other employees. In doing so, we alleviate the workload of the IT Department so that they can focus their efforts elsewhere.
Coming into the Ciena, I expected to learn a lot about major companies and their inner workings. Thus far, it has lived up to my expectations and beyond. Ciena has proved to be an eye opening experience where I get to meet some extraordinary people: just like SHAD.
