Today is the first day of my second week at Indigo! I don’t think I can ever get sick of the brisk walk in the morning from Union station to the office and brushing shoulders with people who look like they always have a place to be.
My day starts at 9am, there’s a nice transition time for the other intern and I to settle down from the bustling streets of Toronto to the cool, focussed atmosphere in the office. Our head office on King Street always excites me- as my supervisor said, “It looks like the inside of an Indigo store”. There are large posters of book covers and inspirational quotes everywhere, my favourite being “Nothing is impossible- the word itself says ‘I’m possible!’” by Audrey Hepburn that we see right when we walk through the office doors.
Last week the two of us helped out with current projects by the Indirect Procurement Department. I like working with the business management and law aspect of Indirect Procurement while the other intern enjoyed the IT aspect, so we got to branch off and gain exposure to the areas we were more interested in. We did market research on potential vendors and suppliers for data management systems; then I reviewed and extracted data from existing contracts within the database, whereas he worked with Excel to learn how to operate and manage Macros.
Today we’re both working together on a project that centralizes janitorial services throughout all the Indigo stores to make the work more efficient. It starts with organizing their contact info, contacting the separate stores for their janitorial service provider and whether they're under contract or not, and going from there to decide the best candidate for the job through our selection process.
There are so many opportunities for us as interns and I can’t wait to see what the rest of August has in store!
