Hatch is a global engineering firm that is focused on oil and gas in its Calgary office. For the course of the month I am assigned to shadow each department to learn about what they do and practice a little for myself. Today at Hatch I was assigned to shadow the Systems and Process Control (S&PC) team. For the first hour I was with the department head, learning about what his department does and how they do it.
The S&PC team focuses on the client’s information management needs. They provide implementation of new technology into hydrocarbon plants and instrumental control for those technologies. One of the major technologies that they provide are control cabinets. These include both the hardware and the software to control a whole hydrocarbon plant remotely (through a computer). They both design, assemble and program these cabinets to precise detail to maximize the safety of the plant operators.
All of these aspects of the job were then showed to me by the lead engineer of the job. I designed a model using their software and made a simple program in their practice room with real working cabinets! So overall it was a very exciting day for me on the job and I cannot wait to see more exciting innovations in the company.
