My first impression of working at Hatch was excellent because that Tuesday morning, I was given free breakfast and met some awesome architects with whom I’d spend the remainder of August working with. My internship experience has been improving ever since.
The first week, I spent a lot of the time learning about workplace safety, Google SketchUp, and the 16 architectural divisions. I also built models of a booth, an oil recovery thing (I’m still not quite sure what it is), and half a crane on SketchUp!
My day began as per usual by checking my work email and practising with SketchUp. Later that morning, I was instructed to cut some shapes to be folded into brochures, which took up most of my day. I learned all about the brochure making process, which I was told is very important in architecture school.
I then ate lunch with my fellow SHAD intern, Susan, who’s doing structural engineering. Sometimes we have “Lunch and Learns”, which is exactly what it sounds like. So far I’ve learned about fire safety, our architecture group, and Sudbury mining.
I can’t wait to see what else I’ll be learning during the remaining two weeks of my internship!
