Picture this. You’ve just finished the SHAD program and have arrived home after being gone for a month. You get in the car, everything around you seems to be out of focus and you’re saddened at leaving all your friends behind. Your parents are speaking to you but they sound far away, almost as if there was some kind of veil separating you from them. Finally, something makes it through this imaginary veil you’ve been hiding behind: ‘Hey are you ready for your internship?’ I realized, then my SHAD experience wasn’t over and that another part of SHAD was about to start.
Fast forward one week and it’s the first day of my internship at SQI Diagnostics, a Medical Technology company that provides diagnostic services to their customers. I had no idea what to expect that first day and it felt surreal to me until I pushed open those doors and walked inside the building. I was instantly greeted by my supervisor, Emma Blackwell and she showed me around and introduced me to some of my co-workers (Shout outs to Rob, Doug, Navjeet, Leo and Aye!). I was completely taken aback by how fast they accepted me, a total stranger, into their work life. I knew I was going to have an amazing month!
My quest began in the quality department and I realized how hard it was to make sure everything was being tracked and documented. I worked on excel spreadsheets and aided my supervisor in the mammoth task of organizing all the documents concerning equipment! At times, it was meticulous but everyone was so positive, I felt like I could’ve completed anything. During my last week, I worked in the lab and learned about how much detail goes into everything that is made within those walls. If it wasn’t for the staff there to help me I surely would’ve been lost (Aye, Shi-Fa and Peter, you guys were amazing!).
I’ve learned a lot from my internship over this past month and am sad that it’s not only almost over, but it’s the last part of my SHAD experience. I remain positive however as whenever one door closes, two open!
