This summer, I had the opportunity to do an internship at Nuance Communications in Montreal, QC. Nuance Communications is a computer software technology company that is reinventing the relationship between people and technology. Nuance aims to create a more human conversation with the technology that surrounds using speech, natural language and biometric technology. I worked in the Mobile division where I had the opportunity to be part of the team developing virtual assistants for cars. The skills and tools I had acquired during my studies in computer science and mathematics prepared me to make a strong contribution to the project I was tasked to. I spent my six weeks developing natural language dialogs and exploring new technology that Nuance is aiming to incorporate in their upcoming products. The time I spent at Nuance has taught me many things relating to the workplace as well as software development. I have always created programs and completed tasks in my computer classes that were only for instructional purposes, but by working as a software development intern, I had the opportunity to see the work that I was completing contribute to a larger project. My contribution would eventually be deployed in real cars and used by people. I am very appreciative that I got the chance to have an internship thanks to SHAD because I am more motivated to pursue a career in engineering and business.
