The anticipation of every day at SHADMac starts the day before with a brief and very vague outline of what is to come. Sometimes, the Program Directors do not even tell us what to expect. Not even the Program Assistants know what is planned for tomorrow! However, yesterday night, our Program Director Kingsley told us that there were 2 places in the world where he can't stop smiling whenever he is there. He said that we would be visiting one of those places today. This left us wondering what exciting things were planned for today!
When we woke up the next day and met up, our Program Director announced that we would be visting the Hamilton Farmers' Market! He mentioned that there were a variety of local goods and pastries availiable for purchase there as well as a shop where they sold home-made ice cream. We couldn't wait. After a hearty breakfast, we attended a lecture on Protection of Intellectual Property as well as another lecture on freedom of speech and its' impact on our ability as youth to innovate. Before the lecture, we had a quick interesting discussion on how some humans are left handed.
Finally it was the trip to the Farmers' Market. We took the bus to downtown Hamilton to the place. Once we arrived, we were blown away by the structure of the building. There were cherries from Niagara, to home made pastries, to a ramen shop! However, everyone had their eyes on the ice cream store. The next thing you know, 56 SHADs were all lining up. It got to a point where the line had to curve outside. I ordered the raspberry cheesecake ice cream flavour. It was so good! The price was cheap and the scoops were enormous.
When we left the market, we went to Tiffany Falls, a local waterfall in Hamilton. Even though it was small, the scenery and trail was breathtaking. Our program assistant, Connor, explained the different layers of rock on the waterfall. This was followed by many pictures!
Overall, the first week has been incredible. We went from being students from all over Canada to becoming a tight-knit community. Everyone at SHADMac is looking forward to the next few weeks.
