Here are some profiles of typical Shad Valley applicants: 
This student is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Study Program. Currently in grade 11, she maintains an 84% average in the especially challenging IB Program of study: Spanish, Advanced Math, Biology, English and French. Her athleticism is demonstrated through Middle Eastern dance and Belly-dancing classes. She is a creative young woman who plays the piano in duos, trios and quartets, takes a starring role in theatre at school and plays the clarinet in the school band.
In addition to her academic and artistic pursuits, she volunteers to fundraise for various local charities and is an assistant art teacher for children.
After this student's first semester, he holds a 90% average and is enrolled in Physics, Music, Chemistry and English at the core level with Advanced Mathematics and grade 12 Biology and World History (University preparation course). As an athlete, he enjoys cross country skiing and has been the starting goalie since grade 8 in boys soccer and received the MVP award in August 2003.
In addition to his studies, he works part time at Tim Horton's and is a Red Cross Volunteer. He has demonstrated ability in science having placed fourth at the provincial level of the Aventis Biotech Challenge.
This student attends a French language school and is fully bilingual. His average in grade 11 is currently 85% taking Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology and French. This young man is considered a respected leader in his school who gets involved by tutoring in science and math and playing on the football team. He is an accomplished pianist who also enjoys volunteering at a local soup kitchen and within his faith community.
This student's passion is undeniably soccer. Inspired by his father, he trained diligently to be accepted to the Bobby Charlton International Soccer School in Manchester, England. His desire to return to Manchester the next year was strong but he learned a valuable life lesson through a summer experience last year: to win a University soccer scholarship, he needed to improve his academics. He is now pursuing this goal fervently.
This grade 11 student holds a 94% average, enrolled in the enriched curriculum (Math, Physics, English, Chemistry and Physical Education) along with taking grade 12 enriched History and Enterprise Education. This is on the heels of a very strong finish in grade 10 with an average of 97%.
He is a dedicated athlete in Speed Skating and Cross Country Running. In addition he serves on many committees including the AIDS Committee, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the Policy Advisory Committee along with participating in clubs at school (Newspaper, Math League, Drama Club and Debate Team).
This grade 12 student has achieved a 92% average which is an increase of 5% over last year's final marks. This year's courses include Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Functions/Pre-Calculus, English, World Geography, Enterprise Education and Ensemble Performance where he has attained a 100%. He is a dedicated year round athlete, playing Basketball, Hockey, Volleyball for the school and Hockey on a community team.
He participates fully in his school community through the Safe and Caring School Committee, Student Council, Drama Club and School Band. He is a community member through the Community Youth Network, Lioness & Lions Speak offs and Provincial Youth Council. He rounds out his time with a part time job at Subway.
