On October 27, 2016, SHAD hosted the SHAD - John Dobson Entrepreneurship Cup event, an annual innovation showcase and awards ceremony which honours SHADs innovators of the year. Awards in eight categories were presented at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at Ryerson University in Toronto, which will become the 13th host university campus for SHAD in 2017, in front of an audience of about 600 people which included SHAD Fellows, family, university representatives and other supporters.
On the cusp of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the students from around the country were challenged this summer to come up with new ideas to improve food security. With approximately four million Canadians experiencing hunger, food security is a critical national issue.
The students came up with many interesting and novel ideas including SHAD Dalhousie’s CrickEats Farming System, human-grade equipment to harvest protein rich crickets for human consumption in a manner that is efficient, affordable and sustainable.
